Hello SorryWatch

I’ve noticed that a number of people in recent times have non-apologised for their wrong doing by saying something along the lines of “it does not reflect who I am as a person”.

Do you think this response is a relatively recent trend spurred on by such things as old social media posts unexpectedly resurfacing, or the proliferation of smart phone cameras – the likes of which often seem to provide highly credible evidence that the deeds they are seeking to avoid responsibility for, are very much a part of who they are and they just didn’t expect them to become public knowledge?

And that perhaps reconciling the schism between their public persona and their private behaviour requires a kind of humbling that they will not or cannot countenance?

I would love to see a SmartWatch article on this topic – if you are so inclined (or have already covered it and I have missed it in my search of your site).

I think I was listening to The TakeAway when I heard about Sorry Watch and the discussion of whether or not apologies were sincere followed by a few examples. I had no idea there was a website until I listened to that program. From what I’ve read on the website, it is quite interesting. I have it tagged for my reading list.
