My understanding is that the ship can theoretically carry 2,000. Most of the time there are two ferries shuttling back and forth, say the Walla Walla and the Tacoma. Each is allowed to carry 1,200 since each has 600 life boat seats and in the event of a water sinking, the other is to assist.

But this makes no allowance for both of them being in trouble, so you will no doubt prefer to travel with life jacket, kayak, and dry-suit.

If things go pear shaped it’s highly unlikely all life boats will be successfully launched and every one launched will carry a full compliment of passengers. My question is: What happens to the other 1,400 (best case scenario) passengers. If I visit my brother I’m taking a kayak AND a life jacket! I better stay dry because even if I float I will freeze in water that far north.
