I rather doubt that anyone can apologize on behalf of the American people... as the representative of the government, you can apologize for the government and say &quot;under my watch, this crappola won&#039;t happen,&quot; but I an apology dilutes if you try to stretch it too far.]]></description>

Um, yeah, but unfortunately, it wasn&#039;t actually &quot;against everything our country stands for&quot;, but rather was right in concert with a lot of what our country stands for and has done, and continues to do. 

Treating it as an isolated incident (which it was not), devoid of relevant context, begs the larger question of what the country *does* &quot;stand for&quot;, and that has very often not been something of which to be proud (e.g., a similar study done in Guatemala).

Like it or not, the bioethics of this nation in general leave a lot to be desired.]]></description>
