He was sorry that he was losing business because of what he said about gay people. A more sincere apology would have gone something like:

“I’m sorry that my sincere opinion about gay people has caused so many people to stop buying my company’s products. If I had known it would be so bad for business to publicly state my prejudice against gay people, I would have kept it to myself. PLEASE start buying my pasta again. PLEASE!!!!”
