I had a very similar conversation with my mother once.

We were arguing about something and she said something extremely hurtful, aimed at a weak spot she knew I had. I started screaming at her. I'll never forget it. "YOU'RE MY MOTHER! You're SUPPOSED TO LOVE ME!" and then I burst into tears. My father was also present. He gathered me into his arms and patted me and said, "She does love you, she does love you, sometimes people say things they don't mean."

This happened at least 30 years ago and my mother is four years dead and I never quite forgave her.

But she never apologized for it, either.

Nothing makes my children more upset than me laughing at something that upset them. So I relate to your tale. (Also, I know Sukey's real name, and thus can guess the ACTUAL rhyme.).

Nadja's story is less amusing, on multiple levels.
