We have a few of those in our neighborhood, although I stipulate that they aren’t in front of our home. I always wonder whether they’re being exploited; whether they’re earning $0.50 an hour at this, trying to work off the $10K they owe to some trafficker who brought them here, spending the time they aren’t manning the fruit stand jammed into a tiny room with other poor souls in the same situation. If it looked like some individual just being enterprising, well, more power to ’em, I guess, but there are so many identical stands with identical merchandise that someone’s got to be organizing it.

According to the original anonymous Charmer, the police say they can’t do anything — talk to the city. The city says they can’t do anything, call the police.

And the whole time they’re munching on guavas. (Ok, no. I made that part up.)

A tiny point: don’t the people who have fruit stands have to have city permits? Surely, SOMEONE knows that the folk are out there, they’re not like some bizarre mushroom that pops up on the lawn when no one’s looking…

I am unclear. Was he attacked by a fruit vendor in his home. Was there an unreasonable demand, ie: “Give me all the fruit in the house and be quick about it, esse.”? It must be terrifying to be without bananas for even a few minutes.

I’ve wondered about those calls, which seem to defy the Do Not Call list consistently. It hadn’t even occurred to me that they’re automated. OF COURSE. And I bet Invoca and companies like it are behind them.

This guy is ridiculous. A perfect SorryWatch subject. “Offensive to some”! (Which he says twice!)

I’m guessing his company is related to the fact that lately all my telemarketing calls have had plausible caller-ID entries (like, from three towns over) even though they’re not remotely local callcenters.
