I think I differ slightly on the merits of that initial statement, though, because I don’t see the ownership-taking so much. He seems like he’s starting with a real apology–he uses those words–but then instantly he slides into How It Affected Me (“I am embarrassed and humiliated”!) and the passive voice relegation of actual blame to “some of the people on my team” and “the conduct that they exhibited.” Whose primary deleterious effect was, apparently, the humiliation of Chris Christie. I don’t see where he even does the token “I was their leader, so the fault is ultimately mine” phrase, let alone something more specific like “I somehow led people on my staff to believe this was okay with me, and going forward I will make sure my staff is clear that blah blah etc.” To me the main thrust of that statement is “my staff did a terrible thing and it embarrassed me personally.”
