There’s a … lot I’m missing here, culturally, but it’s all very intense and awful! I would have been horrified just to be on the flight and observe this going on – how embarrassing for all involved. First, to be smacked with a folder of documents, second, to have your parents disavow your character and acknowledge you’d been poorly raised at the age of 40.
