I am all for the ADL calling him out, and in detail, point by point - but helping him by outlining (as Sorrywatch does, for different reasons) the salient points he should hit in his apology is too parental. He's a grown man, and clearly a swine. Possibly the ADL should photoshop a pig nose on his face and just leave it at that.

Sigh. Oldman’s last paragraph of his apology is clearly an ass-kissing attempt. It totally undercuts what ever sincerity he thought he’d presented. Of course, there is little sincerity, but given where he started he swung for the fences. And then happily and smugly heading back to the clubhouse to knock back bottles of very expensive wine and share more snide jokes with his pals.

I’m not Jewish, but as a recovering Catholic, I understand confession (which is abused all most as much as apologies) and repentance. If Gary were in my confessional, I’d require him to drink 6 bottles of Mogen David while reciting his apology over and over…on YouTube. I would guess by the third bottle he’d realize how very empty his apology is. By the fourth bottle, shit gets real…

ms sorrywatcher snarly, you raise the philosophical question that has always been present with sorrywatch: what value is there in getting someone to apologize for speech acts that, well, just represent what they actually feel? that is, the apology doesnt change their interior life, the apology is instead a nod to maintaining civility. that is a good thing, of course — but i doubt any of us feel gary oldman has changed what he thinks because of having to apologize…
