From my husband’s office in midtown! The underschooled children and I had an only moderately frightening experience taking the First Avenue bus up here (no traffic lights until 36th street!). They’re playing foosball and I’m finally checking texts, voice messages and email. God knows when school/power will be back in our lives. We’re trying to stick it out at home — we can light burners with a match, and geekboy went out and got dry ice to put in our freezer and fridge (a giant block he broke up with a mallet in our yard like a circus strongman and doled out to our neighbors — my he-man!). We have lots of candles and books and dolls, and Jonathan shaved this AM by boiling water on the stove and then using a bowl. It’s all Little House on the Prairie all up in here.

A lovely friend in Brooklyn has offered us lodging, and if it gets really cold (or we really start to need baths) we’ll head there. The mayor says we may have power in 3-4 days; I don’t know that I can be reliably reached before then. Right now I’m just feeling SORRY about Halloween! If I were a good mom I’d be figuring out how to get the kids uptown or to Brooklyn to trick-or-treat, but transportation still feels very daunting. Sandy needs to APOLOGIZE to all the wee East Coast ghouls denied the joys of this holiday.
