Dr. Adrienne Keene (who has been called a Pretendian herself, due to her light skin and non-reservation background) has a good piece on Native Appropriations about this. Her consensus: don’t call yourself Native unless you have a high percentage or have been raised Native. If you meet neither, maybe don’t try to enroll or claim you’re “Indian”?
