In reply to marjorie. Yes, he didn't do homework for the anti-pot column. When he did do homework, for the documentary, he did a great job. And the apology is a good one, but not a perfect one....

Sumac, you’re right — the “as a doctor” thing was BAD. And I honestly hadn’t pondered that the first anti-pot screed came when he was up for a government job and the current pro-pot editorial comes when he’s selling a tv show.

But one thing I appreciated in this apology was that he went into specifics about how marijuana research is funded (or not funded, as the case may be) — it was exactly the opposite of the first piece, in which he accepted the government’s position as perfectly valid medicine.

On some pro-medical MJ and pro-legalization web sites and listservs, some commenters want to string him up for being late to the party. It’s true that his 2009 essay was shameful and inexcusable, but his current confession, although riddled with defensiveness and reservations, is a step in the right direction. My personal belief is that confession, redemption and forgiveness is always a process, not a one-off or a fait d’accompli.
