[…] ranted on SorryWatch about a crappy apology for perhaps the most racist ad ever; a good apology from a director who weirdly went off on an actress; and a horrid non-apology […]

Ugh to both ads.

But I have another complaint here. You, Sorrywatch, characterize the ad, thusly, "Let’s see, we’ve got the stereotype of the predatory/rapey black male, a working class black man targeting a professional class non-black woman..."

What makes Sorrywatch characterize this guy as "rapey"?

He is standing there clearly already in the house, she does not look alarmed to see him, so presumably he is supposed to be there. Admittedly his shirt is looking a bit disreputable (evidently he is lousy at shaving?) He does look vaguely grim at first, but then he smiles and whistles at her. He could easily be her boyfriend at this point in the ad. She then beckons HIM over. He maneuvers to offer (not insist upon) a romantic kiss, and she shoves him in the washer. There is simply nothing "rapey" here on his part. What if it was an ad for wine, and instead of her shoving him in the washer, ended with her pulling out a bottle and a couple of glasses, and the final scene was of them staring off their balcony over a cityscape. The first part of the add would have worked just fine.

The ad still stinks though.

I'm actually excited that Chinese people called this out.
We sometimes think that we as Americans corner the market on ... being "woke," but the world is waking in many ways, and yay for that.
