Good point, Tanita. No matter the intent of the Wine Train’s gift, the result can easily be perceived as “Hey, come back so we can segregate you!” A better response might have been what Chuck Klosterman did when he got called out for using the term “retarded” — as we wrote here a couple of years ago, he apologized publicly and privately (also very well) and then offered a $25K donation to the relevant charity of the caller-outer’s choice.

But the upshot here and everywhere: No one is OWED forgiveness.

I tend to always accept apologies when they’re given, even when I feel that they’re not genuine. Sometimes I let people off the hook so they’ll leave me alone. I admire the hell out of people – women especially – who can refuse to accept an apology, and can take an apology or leave it, on their own terms.

Not for the reasons on the ABC7 comment section, though which boil down to “they” always want money – (why, oh, why can I not get it through my head to NEVER READ THE COMMENTS!?) but I admire these women’s lack of acceptance because they don’t have to accept the polished and perfected mouthing of empty words by a Public Manipulations specialist whose whole job is to make sure that corporations can be seen as people, but never have to sweat or feel pain like, you know, actual human beings.

And what they offered in recompense? Was weird. Why would I want to get on the NVWT again and be segregated to my own car with an additional thirty-nine people?. (I mean, why not resurrect the whole Pullman experience, while they’re at it? Would they get AfAm porters, too?) My bet is that those ladies will never, EVER patronize the NVWT again – and will genteelly trash talk them at every opportunity hereafter. Taking the nice people’s apology and gifts sort of removes that privilege. To my mind, the book club mavens can be sad and traumatized and bitter and yes, angry, even though nice girls aren’t supposed to be – about this for as long as they’d like. Societally we victimize people who aren’t victims, then require those actually wronged to eat their hurt for the sake of “getting along.” And yet, there’s no book I’ve read that says you have to “get along” with a snotty corporation. I suspect these ladies haven’t read that book, either.
