The lucid and illuminating response by Susan McCarthy was appreciated. It was an apt observation on an issue that most steer clear of.
I wonder if the man has ever himself been raped. It is not a salacious or witty experience.

Thanks, oupiglet! And wow, purely on the apology front, that new info makes things worse! As you could see, I ignored all the stuff in the Buzzfeed article about Inman’s SEO stuff and politics, because a) it’s not relevant to our topic of apology and b) I actually have no problem with people trying to make money. I thought the writer’s grafting all these other accusations (including INMAN RUNS MARATHONS! oooh, gotcha) onto the quite good summary of the rape-comic issue was odd. So I’m not surprised Stuef got some facts wrong. But for Inman to say, in his defense, “I WROTE THAT RAPE COMIC RIGHT AFTER I FOUND OUT MY FRIEND DIED OF BRAIN CANCER” and “I WAS SAD BECAUSE I MISSED MY SISTER’S BABY’S BIRTH WHAT WITH BEING FAR AWAY DOING CHARITY” and “I SUPPORT MANY ADOPTED DISABLED CHILDREN”? I’m sorry for his loss and mazel tov on the mitzvah-doing, but *these things do not excuse bad rape jokes and bad apologies.* Yes, it is gross that the guy who wrote the Buzzfeed piece also wrote a vile thing about Sarah Palin’s kid. Again, this does not excuse telling a lousy rape joke and then sorry-iffing about it.
