My very favorite part of the whole apology is the gentle way he tells his supports to back off at the end.

“To those who think I shouldn’t have to apologize, I want to remind you that I get to decide what I apologize for, so there’s no need to come to my defense.”

And here is a prime example of how human beings can learn AND apologize. Even the most sensitive and evolved person can STILL be offensive (an Asian/gay/ minority status doesn’t grant us absolution from abusing our privilege), react badly (“take it down a notch” is probably not the best knee-jerk reply, but it could have been worse) or evade blame (if you all hadn’t used caps…) – but I would imagine that our Mr. Sulu – er, Takei – will think twice before sharing and posting that kind of abelist “humor.”

The thing is, we ALL have something to learn about stereotypes, privilege and respect – thank you for posting this, I’ve learned something myself.

people don’t think about it–the everyday knee-jerk judgement is infuriating, insulting & v v common. seeing it spread to 7.5 million people on the internet…aaargh.
