I’d forgotten how great it is, the father’s undefended happiness. I always sympathized with the older brother too, but now I see that he needed just a little substance-wasting of his own, is all, and I wish he’d gotten some at some point.

I agree that the younger brother’s apology is excellent, because it is an actual and accurate reflection of his genuine repentance, and for that reason it is both necessary and irrelevant.
