Suppose it was Dorner, and suppose they killed Dorner. Wouldn't it have been better to take him alive if possible?

I am not law enforcement, and maybe I am totally naive. Though the actions of the first officers (who talked to, and sent on the way, the surfer) suggest otherwise. But in my liberal, knee-jerk, "criminal-loving", not to mention tree-hugging, opinion - you always give a suspect a chance to surrender if at all possible. (It was already PROVEN possible in this situation.) Certainly blazing away at all comers is no way for the police to behave even when freaked out. Good officer training is supposed to protect us from freaked out police officers doing the wrong thing in a frightening situation. That is the point of it after all.

The more I learn about this, the more dismayed I become, not the reverse. That in itself is dismaying...

Like that will ever happen. 100 shots and they didn't kill either innocent victim? Assuming they don't get fired, they should get mandatory remedial handgun training (and be relieved of their weapons until it's completed and they pass a firing line test).
