And I agree on the big person apologizing.

It was stolen by a transient and sold by him for five bucks. (assuming the truth has been told.) He should not have done it. I do not condone theft. It was wrong. Would he have stolen it if he thought it was more than just a yuppy decoration? Hard to say. Was his apology sincere? Without the text we can't guess, but I don't think being in jail proves it was not. You can commit a wrong action, thinking it would not matter much to those wronged, and be still be sincerely sorry when the consequences were worse than you thought they would be.

"I'm hungry. Here is a piece of kitch these no doubt well-fed homeowners will just replace if they care enough. Five bucks would let me eat."

Hm. This is a tough one for me, because I DON'T think that apologies have value if you have to say them. From jail. To strangers you ripped off because the mood struck you. BUT. As a value-added moment to the experience for an Autistic child? YES. Bring on the bad adult apologizing. Bring on the big person modeling what we do when we offend others. Bring on the societal role-playing. Maybe it'll have some value to the thief, too.
