Canadian musician DJ NDN, who is Anishnabe from Nipissing First Nations, apologizes for his nouveau-Redskins* t-shirt.
Or rather, “apologizes.”
As Sumac quoted me (so I quote her back, nyah nyah) in one of her posts, “A totally facetious WE ARE POINTEDLY BEING SNARKY HERE statement of regret is not an actual apology, but rather a form of humor that riffs on the structure of apology. As a consciously crafted and deliberate non-apology, it should not be held not to the standards of apology, but rather to the standards of humor.”
Snarky DJ NDN is a member of the group A Tribe Called Red, which mixes traditional powwow vocals and drums with electronic music.

I accept DJ NDN’s apology. And in return, as a Jew, I apologize for Dan Snyder.
(Actually, no one has the moral authority to apologize on behalf of another person, as we discussed in the homophobic-pasta post, unless the person in question is a small child shrieking in a corner, incapable of apologizing due to smallness and immaturity, and you are the adult responsible for that person. So really, I should say I REGRET Dan Snyder reflecting poorly on my people.)
*PS. I also apologize for thinking this was a parodic Redskins shirt when it is a parodic Cleveland Indians shirt. I do not know from sports.
::sigh::
Yes, I immediately thought, “Oh, take that, Redskins owner!” But, no. Baseball, or hackey sack or something.
WOW. And you know, it really hits me how I wouldn’t have had the nerve to wear that shirt in public, and yet… wow. Talk about “dominant” culture; if enough people are ignoring the injustice of something, it really becomes normalized. Ew.
Ian Campeau (aka DJ NDN) is a local celebrity here in Ottawa, Canada.
